Frankenthaler on Paper ( We will likely go see this in class, too)
Arthur Ross Gallery | 220 South 34th Street

January 17 – March 29, 2020

Renowned for her “soak-stain” abstract paintings, Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) played a seminal role in both Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. With a career spanning six decades, she is considered one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century.

Frankenthaler On Paper presents 10 paintings on paper and 17 prints that date from 1970 to 1993. These rarely seen works on paper reflect her painterly process and were considered by the artist equal to her large-scale paintings. During the 1960s and 1970s several groundbreaking print workshops were established, while simultaneously artists and collectors had a renewed interest in contemporary printmaking. In 1961, Frankenthaler produced her first lithograph, First Stone (1961) with Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE). Inspired by the process, she experimented continuously, working with several master printers at workshops across the country and abroad, such as Tyler Graphics Ltd., Crown Point Press, Mixografia, and 2RC Edizioni d’Arte. The exceptional paintings on paper and prints on view are the result of the artist’s dialogue with color, line, space, and gesture. This exhibition is organized with generous loans from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, New York and a Private Collection, and is curated by Arthur Ross Gallery Executive Director Lynn Marsden-Atlass.
