Every day, Google has a doodle that honors or celebrates a person, place, thing, etc. Today’s Google doodle honors Anna May Wong, the first ever Chinese-American movie star in Hollywood. The doodles are done beautifully in black and white gradients and showcases the beauty and charisma Wong possessed. As an Asian American, I wanted to call attention to this seemingly small but meaningful gesture because representation in media for people of color is typically scarce. It has only been recently that Asian bodies have gained more limelight in Hollywood since the advent of Crazy Rich Asians‘s success. However, Wong, whose career dates back to the 1920s, was the first to pave the way.
