Sound and Health: Hospitals

This is an episode of the podcast 99% Invisible that discusses how sounds can be used to convey information in hospitals settings while making the atmosphere much more pleasant for patients. You may be familiar with the constant onslaught of beeps from all the machinery in a hospital room, which can contribute to feelings of worry, anxiety, and discomfort among patients and their family. This podcast describes how the healthcare information from these machines (like blood pressure and heart rate) can be translated into music to play in patients’ rooms in place of the noises, and I thought it was an interesting example of describing the characteristics of something concrete in order to create an abstraction of it.
