Can you own a font?

According to Barbara Kruger, no! Kruger’s most famous piece is a spoof on the famous “I think, therefore I am” quote from Descartes: “I shop, therefore I am.” This strong, anti-consumerist message would later be brought up again in a much more ironic context, decades after she made it. Her style of using a white Futura font over a red background was emulated by the popular fashion brand, Supreme.

While Kruger herself doesn’t seem bothered by their use of this style, Supreme took notice when another group tried to trademark a similarly style design by a rivaling company, eventually suing them and settling out of court.
