One of my housemates loves to have music videos on instead of just the music, so I’ve been seeing some really cool videos recently. One of the most amazing, though, was Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, a film to the music of Daft Punk’s 2001 album, Discovery. At first, I was under the impression that it would be like a musical with some scenes between songs, but it’s way more creative than that. The film, which was put animated by a Japanese animation studio, takes you through the album with each song playing to an entrancing story of a musical group being abducted from their home planet to become stars on Earth. Even though there is no speaking, the anime-styled illustration allows for great emotional expression so that the viewers can really connect with the characters and understand the narrative. Also, if you don’t have a whole hour to spare, each song’s music video is a scene from the movie.
