Meltdown Flags – Data Visualization

“Meltdown Flags” is a project that edits designs of flags to represent the way climate change is impacting glaciers around the world. The artists have interpreted the white areas on flags as the glaciers, and hence the flags see a gradual decrease in the amount of white on them, representing the way glaciers are melting rapidly. Although this seems quite simple, I think it’s a really effective way of showing the impacts of climate change on something that many people easily recognize. White also contrasts strongly against other colors, so it helps to emphasize the artists’ point. Since our next project is related to using data in art as well, I thought this was a cool project that also uses data in a different way!
